Why Is Trauma-Informed Care So Important?

According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, “Trauma is a near universal experience of individuals with behavioral health problems.” Trauma is incredibly pervasive in our society. Nearly 90% of American adults will experience a traumatic event in their lives. There is a high likelihood that you will experience some form of trauma in your lifetime. Individuals are impacted by trauma in different ways, but there is always an impact. Working with a trauma-informed psychologist increases the likelihood that you will receive the right type of care for your needs.

Moreover, trauma-informed care means that you can rest assured that your provider will be able to recognize what has been traumatic for you and can put any difficulties you are facing into this very important context. Often if you work with a provider who does not have the necessary expertise in trauma and PTSD, common post-traumatic behaviors can be unfairly pathologized and met with the question “what’s wrong with you?”. Trauma-informed care providers are able to ask the very important question of “what happened to you?”. This changes the whole dynamic of how you relate to yourself and your problems.

Our Approach to Trauma-Informed Care

Breyta adheres to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) best practices for trauma-informed care. A trauma-informed approach is based upon four assumptions and guided by six main principles.

The Four Trauma-Informed Assumptions:

  1. Realizing the widespread impact of trauma and understanding potential paths for recovery

  2. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff, and others involved with the system

  3. Responding by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices

  4. Resisting re-traumatization

Six Principles of Trauma-Informed Care:

  1. Safety

  2. Trustworthiness and Transparency

  3. Peer Support

  4. Collaboration and Mutuality

  5. Empowerment, Voice and Choice

  6. Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues

The Breyta Difference

Breyta psychologists provide a process-based model of evidence-based care. We focus on processes of change that lead to desired outcomes. We pay attention to signs and symptoms but aren't preoccupied with them. We want to help you live better, not just feel better; creating lasting change that you can trust. We integrate heart with science and know that just because we have a hammer, not everything is a nail. We tailor our treatments to meet your specific goals and needs.

The Most Innovative Group Psychology Practice In Raleigh, NC

Our services are evidence-based, scalable, and transdiagnostic. In plain English that means we take a client-centered approach to care, where you are the driving force behind planning your treatment goals. Whether you want to enhance aspects of your life, learn more about yourself, or want to address problematic emotional experience or behavior, we can help. We address what behaviors and patterns aren't working for you and help you move towards meaningful behavior change. As you begin to live differently and engage in behaviors that are important to you, often you will notice your relationship to your emotions changing in significant and positive ways. Our psychologists are here every step of the way to assist you in learning to walk this journey.

Breyta offers the best mental health care in Raleigh, NC

When CBT meets mindfulness, the emphasis shifts from changing or fixing the content of our challenging thoughts to becoming more intimately and consistently aware of these thoughts and patterns. The awareness itself reduces the grip of persistent and pernicious thought loops and story lines.

Our Vision

Trauma is ubiquitous in the experience of human suffering. It has far-reaching effects for individuals and their loved ones, and requires specialized care. We meet the demand within the Raleigh, and broader North Carolina area, for the presence of a trauma-informed mental health clinic that can speak to this specific need. We exist to meet the exigencies of our population and to engage in meaningful change from a trauma-informed model of care.

Our Mission

Our mission is to acknowledge the relative impact of trauma on the individual and society and work to heal its effects. We strive to provide evidence-based care to our clients, educational opportunities to providers and the community, and to increase awareness of trauma-related mental health issues. By balancing clinical intervention with compassion and connection, our goal is to create a unique fusion of heart and science that is grounded in a model which acknowledges the repercussions of trauma sequelae on human life and relationships.

Our Core Values

Trauma-Informed Care

  • Instead of asking "what's wrong with you?" we ask "what happened to you?" We help clients understand the systemic, generational, personal, and contextual effects of trauma.

Evidence-Based Practice

  • We generate treatment plans based on the best available research evidence, our clinical expertise, and patient values, preferences, and characteristics. We tailor the best care possible to your unique needs.

Advocacy

  • We provide trauma-informed mental health education, consultation, and encouragement within our community. We work to decrease stigma related to mental health, and promote trauma-informed care in practice.

Empowerment

  • We support our staff and clients in making informed decisions about care; recognizing the inherent worth and dignity within all people and the right of autonomy that is predicated on that truth. Ours is an environment of collaboration, respect, and education where we encourage client participation and choice.
